UBNT

Ubnt is a wireless equipment provider that supplies equipment to anyone that needs a high speed connection. Their equipment is designed to use the public airwaves and is able to provide connections for the last mile. Their equipment is low cost but has a great reputation. They provide tech support over the internet and have chat rooms where installers will talk about the equipment and help other installers with the installation. They do not have a sales team, this is all done by word of mouth and recently some television ads. I am posting my notes on the company, and what equipment they provide before I do a page post on them. They provide Antennae’s, dishes, Wireless Access Points, routers, and surveillance equipment.

Wow Andy, what an awesome write-up. You really understand the business. Do you use their products yourself?

Thanks for your contribution.

Saul

Thanks Saul,

I want to thank you for pointing me to this company. I am excited by their product and they seem to be doing really well except for that little problem with people stealing their technology. I am still working through the financials but should have a write up by the end of the week.

I work in the metro division or local division for a telephone company. I worked for Nortel for 7 years as a foreman and then went to work for Sprint and now work for another large local provider. So telecommunications interests me.

Thanks again Saul, they are doing exciting stuff.

I live on the east coast of Hawaii near the furthest east point of all the Hawaii islands. Is there some way any of the equipment that is produced by ubiquiti could help me get internet access?

Dacocnutfarm,
It is possible. How are you getting access at this time. Is it across telephone lines with a modem? Also how far are you from the nearest town with internet access. The cost of the equipment isn’t the biggest problem. But the cost of the access to the telephone or cable network is where the cost is going to be. If you have farms along the way to your farm or ranch you could all go into it together and reduce the cost that way. Also when it rains, if it rains hard, you will get reduced signal. These are all line of site also so it would help if you had buildings or mountains that you could put poles up on to shoot the signal to.

Andy,

Thank you for your terrific insight on UBNT. I was wondering if you saw this article and if you had an opinion on it? Apparently, GOOG is also developing a new product to try to help deliver internet access to underserved areas. Do you view this as a potential threat to UBNT? I would love to hear your interpretation of this article and any potential implications. Thanks!

Nice find Jason, I had read a year ago that Google was testing this in Africa but I can see by your article that they are really serious. If they can get this going it would be a problem with UBNT on the low end. Anytime you can give somebody something for free it will affect anyone competing with you. Especially in the emerging markets. But UBNT provides higher bandwidth than Google can do on their balloons. I suspect that UBNT is working (this is only speculation but the way that their CEO thinks and how he wants to grow it makes sense) on getting more speeds out of their products. I think we will see them come out with dishes that will combine feeds to get higher speeds. But Google could upgrade their balloons to provide 4g or 5g speeds. If that is the case it would be very disruptive and I wouldn’t put anything past Google to do this. At rates of 3g I don’t think UBNT has much to worry about but if they get to 5G I think a lot of companies will be toast. Its much cheaper to float balloons in the sky then it is to maintain and place dishes and Antennae’s, or run copper and fiber. Right now I am not worried about this although I think this needs to be watched. We need to see where it goes and if it actually gets off the ground. But I think it will be years before UBNT will have to worry about it.

Thanks,
Andy
