A Datadog technical review

Datadog, along with top competitors like Dynatrace and New Relic, can provide a unified and real-time view into a company’s entire technology stack.

I am content not knowing what exactly distinguishes Datadog’s platform over the competition.

For now, I will let the hypergrowth speak for itself. Datadog is growing OVER TWICE AS FAST as both New Relic and Dynatrace.

It’s alarming to think about Datadog slowing to New Relic levels of growth any time soon, so we really have to believe they’re not just the hot thing right now, but actually have a better product. This inspired me to do a little searching.

I’m not a techie, so I sure can’t compare the products, but I thought I’d compare the info available on their websites for Datadog to New Relic. Woah! If the difference in their products is as vast as the difference in their marketing, I can see why Datadog is crushing them.

Look how disorganized this is: https://newrelic.com/platform

and how clear this is: https://www.datadoghq.com/product/

I like how Datadog has links at the top for “Integrations, APM, Logs, Synthetics” which take you to those sections, and each section is clickable to take you to:

https://www.datadoghq.com/apm/
https://www.datadoghq.com/network/
or https://www.datadoghq.com/log-management/

Compare to the somewhat confusing:
https://newrelic.com/products/application-monitoring
https://newrelic.com/products/infrastructure
https://newrelic.com/products/logs

I don’t see these on the “Platform” page where the jumbled New Relic One information sits, but actually had to google “New Relic APM” etc to find them. (And even googling Datadog stuff was easier, believe it or not, and returned other useful links like https://www.datadoghq.com/blog/log-analytics-dashboards/.)

Even with pricing it’s this:

https://www.datadoghq.com/pricing/

https://newrelic.com/products/infrastructure/pricing
https://newrelic.com/products/application-monitoring/pricing…
https://newrelic.com/products/logs/pricing
https://newrelic.com/products/browser-monitoring/pricing
https://newrelic.com/products/mobile-monitoring/pricing
https://newrelic.com/products/synthetics/pricing
etc

Datadog has video, better explanation, and just more information. It looks easier. Things are simply more organized. If I were looking to buy, I feel like I can better understand what they’re selling. If Datadog’s product is truly better, which I’d expect, all the better. But even if Datadog is just better at selling a similar product, that’s something.

But as Muji said: I’d love to hear from any folks that have utilized any monitoring services across Datadog, Dynatrace, or New Relic, in order to get the user perspective of what these companies offer, and what distinguishes Datadog from the competition.

Thanks,
Bear
