Whilst this is obviously likely to be true in the context of heart disease (assuming this means ASCVD) and T2D secondary to obesity, it’s a mistake to imagine that heart disease, at least, is a phenom of modern times. It’s not. It’s a mistake that’s been made before, mind.
One obvious reason to imagine this to have been the case is that a good many signs and symptoms of ASCVD….shortness of breath, oedema of congestive heart failure, chest pain on exertion etc weren’t recognised as part of this problem. Likewise the visible signs of xanthalasma etc. Without the huge burden of widespread obesity and it’s sequelae grabbing the spotlight, the various infectious diseases were more of a worry. We should also mention that many were hungry during the Great Depression. Food was rationed during WWII. Opportunity to overeat was possible after the war and enjoyed by many.
