A list of solar inverters

Here’s an article and video on the various solar inverters in the market. It’s amusing - they have a car brand analogy to explain the various competitors.

So you’ve got quotes for a few different solar PV systems. Everyone says their inverter is the best, surprise, surprise. So how do you decide which one to go for?
Well, every bit of solar power produced by your panels will pass through your inverter, and it also contains critical safety shutdown electronics (called Anti Islanding Protection). So it is critical that you choose one that is up to the job.
To make sense of it all, here’s a video I made that shows you what to look for and what to avoid (If you don’t feel like watching a video of me droning on, then feel free to skip it and read my summary infographic below!):

Here is where the inverter technology is most likely headed. Brought to you by NREL and sponsored by Google and IEEE.

An open competition to build a (much) smaller power inverter, with a $1,000,000 prize.

July 2015

Registered teams must submit a technical approach and testing application by July 22, 2015.

October 2015

Up to 18 finalists will be notified of their selection for final testing at the testing facility. They are required to bring their inverters in person to a testing facility in United States by October 21, 2015.

Device Manufacturers

One promising set of new technologies which may allow for the achievement of higher power densities are wide bandgap (WBG) semiconductors, such as Gallium Nitride (GaN) and Silicon Carbide (SiC). Below are a list of WBG device manufacturers who have made pages describing their technology, how it might enable contestants to win the competition and opportunities for obtaining some of their devices.
