Floodwater overwhelmed pump at Exxon Mobil’s Joliet, Illinois refinery; facility remains offline following outage

The refinery handles between 6% and 10% of the midwest’s diesel and gasoline supply. Happened last Sunday, they hope the shutdown will only last a week.

Meanwhile, stories starting to appear that mention that “home heating oil” and “diesel” come from roughly the same part of the hydrocarbon chain, so prices will rise in tandem. Not exactly good news for the northeast, or the Dakotas or other northern/midwestern states.

I am wondering if I should look in my electricity costs. Fortunately, I do not use oil for heating. But will NG be through the roof in January, when Eversource reprices kwatts for the winter.

Agreed on the northeast, but here in the Midwest it’s mostly nat gas for winter heating.

So far it is looking like a normal year. Nat gas storage is currently a few percent below last year but a few percent above the 5-year average.
