Underground boring to install fiber optics can hit pipelines risking gas explosion.
Happens all the time. However, typically gas companies locate their lines well. Most boring that I witness, the bore head is located every 10 feet and the locate is less than 3 inches off in any direction.
Most of the time when underground facilities are hit it is because the operator failed to locate them properly, or the work site covered up, or in some other way obscured the marks.
Bad things happen.

We had a big explosion in Venezuela, a telephone company crew hitting a city gas pipeline. No idea if it was for fiber optic cable or some other work.
