Box acquires digital sig startup

Sounds like more competition for Docusign.

Box acquires SignRequest for $55 million to expand into e-signatures…

Of course, DropBox acquired HelloSign in 2019, to be integrated as a DropBox native feature - which hasn’t happened yet. Box is intending to do the same with SignRequest - and paid 10X less.

Box has announced Box Sign, a new e-signature product built on SignRequest’s technology that will be integrated natively into Box. The new product is expected to launch in general availability in summer 2021, with the acquisition expected to close by the end of April, according to a Box press release. Box Sign will be included as part of the Box business and enterprise plans, though SignRequest will continue to operate as a standalone business serving existing and new customers from its current online platform.

The move comes as businesses across the spectrum have rapidly embraced remote work due to the global pandemic, meaning more processes have had to transition to the cloud — including signatures.

I think this means that more and more Docusign needs to gain more traction on its workflow and framework, and perhaps eventually integrate documents signed with other products into its flows (if it hasn’t done so already).

The company sold for $55mil? Why? That doesn’t seem to have much value in a market segment currently bigger than $25bil.

This is so small it doesn’t seem like there is anything here to worry about re:competition. Docusign is and will remain the dominate player in the e-sig market.
