Back in 2008 comedians highlighted the problem with a few jokes. Punchline:

When the Penn Central railroad went bankrupt, it tried that ploy: threaten to stop operating and crash the economy, unless Nixon threw a big pile of money at them. Nixon nationalized the railroad instead.

iirc, Sweden had it’s own banking crisis several years ago. Sweden’s solution was to nationalize the banks, stabilize them, then reprivatize them. When the US banks got themselves into trouble, the Swedish solution was suggested. “NO!!!” howled the bankers “that’s SOCIALISM!!!” So the government threw money at the privileged banks, including ones that didn’t need it, because the more reasonable, proven effective, alternatives, were excluded on ideological grounds.
