Chinese Cars at Smartphone Prices

Big cultural differences between American & Chinese vehicle consumer.

In China, the prices of new cars have reached incredibly low values, which are comparable to the prices of modern smartphones. Chinese automakers have managed to offer vehicles at prices ranging from just $610 to $1,714, making them the most affordable models in the world.

According to the automotive publication Autoevolution, these models are specially designed for urban use and short distances, and their affordability opens the door to a wider population that until now could not afford a car.

They are affordable till you have an accident. You know cars have accidents. You are not immune.

The amputations bring the costs of the cars up.

“A wider population”…remember China has 1.2 billion people…wowie, imagine the traffic jams.

Meanwhile, I am waiting for the big three, and the oil industry, to “persuade” the government to outlaw everything smaller than a 5,000lb SUV as “unsafe”.

Late 1960s, the first Subaru 2-cylinder engine cars were $1298 list, $888 sale price. Metal was maybe slightly thicker than a standard metal (food) can.
