Data Centers In Space … space …space (echo)

For those anticipating the SpaceX IPO, and there are a lot, here’s a 6 minute video from the Wall Street Journal about the issues to be faced by putting data centers in space. It’s a lot more than just hoisting up some solar panels and chips, and much of what might be required has not been tested at any level, much less at scale.

That said, good video showing the possibilities ahead:

How much are SpaceX and Blue Origin going to borrow? These projects could bankrupt them. Note I am not saying it will cost Musk or Bezos anything.

Turns out Apple is not standing still. Later this year cloud AI will face a massive invasion by Apple. Neither is Microsoft, offering the Windows Mini PC with AMD AI chips.

Based on current trends, yes—future Mac Minis (starting with M5-series models in 2026) are designed to handle many of the AI tasks currently limited to cloud services, particularly when running specialized local LLMs (Large Language Models) or AI agents.

By early 2026, Mac mini configurations are becoming the preferred “local AI” hub, allowing users to move away from subscriptions to privacy-focused, on-device AI tools.

Here is how future Mac Minis will compare to today’s cloud AI:

The 2026 AI Shift: M5 Mac Mini Capabilities

The 2026 Mac Mini, expected with M5 and M5 Pro chips, is designed specifically for “local AI,” offering a massive leap over previous models.

  • 4x Faster AI Performance: The M5 chip features next-generation GPUs with specialized Neural Accelerators in each core, enabling AI tasks to run 3.5 to 4 times faster than the M4.
  • Run Large Local Models: Due to Apple’s Unified Memory Architecture, these machines can handle middle-size LLMs (like 7B-14B parameter models) and advanced agents (e.g., OpenClaw) locally.
  • Higher Memory Capacity: To support local RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) systems and complex AI agents, Apple is focusing on high-memory configurations, with 16GB becoming the new base standard.
  • Privacy-First AI: Instead of sending data to the cloud, future Mac Minis allow users to run AI locally, eliminating API costs and ensuring data stays private.

Future Mac Minis vs. “Today’s” Cloud AI

The “capacity” gap is closing, but with distinctions:

  • What they can do: Future Mac Minis can run powerful localized models that act as personal assistants, coding partners, and content generators that feel just as fast as today’s web-based chat services.
  • What they can’t do: While closing the gap, a local device will still struggle to match the sheer “frontier” intelligence of massive, multi-billion parameter models running on server farms (like GPT-5 or equivalent) in 2026.
  • Key Advantage: A Mac Mini offers superior performance-per-watt for 24/7 AI agent operation, consuming only 5-10W while running models.

Summary of Future Upgrades

Feature M4 Mac Mini (2024) M5 Mac Mini (Expected 2026)
AI Focus Initial Apple Intelligence “AI-First” Architecture
AI Speed Baseline 3.5x - 4x faster
Memory Bandwidth Lower ~30% higher (153GB/s)
Base Memory 16GB 16GB+

In short, while they may not completely replace the absolute largest cloud models, 2026+ Mac Minis will run 90% of the daily AI tasks people use today, faster, locally, and privately.

Interesting!

There are problem finders and there are problem solvers. :slightly_smiling_face:

The Captain

When it comes to putting machines of any sort in space, you kind of need to figure out the problems ahead of time rather than find them out after you have spent $100 million putting the machine up there and have no way to give it service or make alterations.
