Emily Litella on nuclear power plants

Just four years after New York State closed a nuclear power plant, Gov. Hochul announces plans for a new one.

Ms. Hochul said the plant, which would produce half as much power as the Indian Point complex north of New York City that was shut down four years ago, would help avert the “rolling blackouts” that have plagued some other states.

Indian Point, units 2 and 3 were permanently shut down in 2020 and 2021 respectively. The last full year that both units operated was therefore 2019.

In 2019, power companies in New York state generated 50,229 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity from fossil fuels. The largest share was from natural gas burning power plants.

Fast forward to 2024, and New York state generated 64, 586 GWh from fossil fuels.

State officials said that Indian Point would be replaced with renewables. Instead, power production from fossil fuels has gone up 28% since Indian Point 2 & 3 were shut down.

It is nice to see this initiative from Gov Hochul, but there are still many questions about how this happens, who pays for it, who is going to operate the new plant(s), etc.

From the following article, Constellation Energy is apparently interested in expanding the existing Nine Mile Point plant on Lake Ontario.

The fossil fuels industry, Trump administration and the Republicans have worked hard to keep Wind Energy and Solar Energy out of reach for New York.
