## Trump withdraws US from World Health Organization

## Trump says he will enact tariffs on Canada, Mexico on Feb. 1

Then, later in the evening, he expressed that his administration was “thinking in terms” of imposing 25% tariffs on Mexico and Canada on Feb. 1.

## Trump signs executive order ending birthright citizenship

Among executive orders signed by Trump at the Oval Office is one ending birthright citizenship.

Such a move, though, is expected to face significant legal hurdles. Under the 14th Amendment to the Constitution, any person born within the territory of the U.S. is a U.S. citizen.

When a reporter pointed out that that order will likely be challenged, Trump said, “You could be right.”

So, he’s giving Mexico and Canada another week to grovel, and pay up.

Yes, his EO on citizenship will be challenged. The SCOTUS, to be consistent with it’s ruling on the “insurrection” clause of the 14th, would need to hold that the citizenship clause is also meaningless, unless Congress passed enforcing legislation, as required by the last section of the amendment.

Order to deport Pretender ready to be issued by an appropriate authority. After all, he is not eligible to be President because he ended birthright citizenship in the US. Thus, he is not a natural born citizen of the US per his issued Order and he will be the first to be deported. It is so ordered.

Found the complete text of the EO, rather than depending on what the media says. It cites enforcing legislation that Congress had passed regarding citizenship: 8 U.S.C. 1401. It also, apparently, is not retroactive, but to take effect for people born 30 days from the date of the EO. The EO argues that people born in the US, to aliens, are not “subject to the jurisdiction” of the US.

Text of the EO:

>
> By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, it is hereby ordered: Section 1.

Will the $35 cap on insulin be removed ?

Some Pretty heavy-duty Macro Economic stuff, drug costs will rise even more than normal for a lot of citizens.

I’m not particularly happy with ‘my schadenfreude’.
I do NOT think that’s a ‘good’ attitude for my karma.

Personally, I try to follow the 8-fold path list of ‘how to live a good life’. Not because I’m Buddhist, or even particularly religious, but because I WANT to act and think and live in a way that I/ralph approve of.
And having schadenfreude… aint it.

But, I’m mindful enough to know that I’m feeling it.

No.

The $35 cap on insulin was part of the Inflation Reduction Act. The Executive Order that Trump signed yesterday didn’t (and could not) affect that. Instead, Trump’s EO just reversed a prior Biden EO that had directed HHS to develop additional payment and delivery models to try to reduce the cost of drugs - and then submit those for potential incorporation into rule-making or future legislation.

If the Biden EO resulted in anything concrete happening, I wasn’t able to find it in any quick Googling. So there’s probably not much of a concrete effect to Trump’s EO undoing it. I would not expect much of a near-term impact to the prices that US’ians pay for their pharmaceuticals.

Most of these rapid EOs are just for show (as per usual). The new administration is trying to project a sense of urgency and rapid action. But government doesn’t work that way, government is very slow to change, even when there’s a “bulldozer” type of person heading it. The macro economy, the “market”, because it is comprised of “everyone”, usually can tell real from fake action, and most of the time prices things accordingly. That’s why the pharma company stocks didn’t shoot up immediately. That isn’t to say that overall this administration won’t be good for the pharma industry, that remains to be seen, and when the market is convinced that it is, the stocks will rise accordingly.

At the same time I wouldn’t be surprised to see a sudden drop-off in things such as applications for off-shore wind permits.

And as I was writing this post…

> **[Trump Orders End to All Wind Energy Permits](https://heatmap.news/politics/wind-executive-order-trump)**
>
> The worst case scenario for the wind industry is here.

Trump on Monday evening issued a sweeping executive order that the government “shall not issue new or renewed approvals, rights of way, permits, leases, or loans for onshore or offshore wind projects” pending what the order describes as a “comprehensive assessment” of the industry’s myriad impacts on the economy, environment and other factors.

This affects **all offshore wind development** in the U.S., because all of that takes place in the Outer Continental Shelf, an ocean expanse under federal control that is leased for all kinds of energy production.

It also impacts wind projects on federal lands. Although the extent of the impact to onshore wind is unclear because some wind projects are on state lands, project developers often must get approvals under federal environmental and species protection laws, so an end to permits will be quite painful for the sector…

Additionally, the order specifically bans wind energy development at the site sought after for the Lava Ridge wind project in Idaho. Lava Ridge has been contentious because of its vicinity to a historic internment camp where Japanese Americans were forced to live during World War II. The project was fully permitted days before the end of Biden’s term.

That’s not a big change. Those applications were all disappearing anyway due to lack of capital available for it. Nobody in their right mind invests in off-shore wind now after all the deals that have failed recently.

More big government and regulations. More red tape hindering commercial development. Why doesn’t the free market extend to offshore wind?
