Economics was originally referred to as the dismal science because economists such as John Stuart Mill believed concepts such as slavery were immoral. Today the term is used more in the context that economics highlights difficult trade-offs and general uncertainty. The two handed economist problem.
However, most economists agree that fiscal stimulus is prudent in times of high unemployment and not prudent in times of near full employment (like today) because of the inflation risk. “We are all Keynesians now.”
Today, the POTUS proposed stimulating the economy by giving every adult American $5,000, which would cost an estimated $1 trillion dollars financed entirely by borrowing.
This is on topic for METAR because inflation has been above the Fed’s target for years, and a massive increase in government spending and borrowing would certainly stoke the inflation fires.
We know this is a serious offer, because the POTUS previously promised a one-time $2,000 tariff rebate to all Americans. Since we now have all cashed our rebate checks, we know this is a legtimate offer.
The caveat is the POTUS will only provide the stimulus if his party wins the midterms. So if you want free money, you gotta give the POTUS the tools to do his job.
