Lufthansa Could Be Forced To Fly 18,000 Empty Planes To Keep Slots
https://simpleflying.com/lufthansa-ghost-flights/

The Lufthansa Group has said that it will be forced to fly the equivalent of 18,000 empty planes during the winter season in order to keep its valuable airport slots. The ‘use it or lose it’ slot rule had been suspended in March 2020, but was brought back incrementally and now stands at 50%. Despite canceling some 33,000 flights, the airline fears unnecessary flights will be operated just to preserve its slots.

Lufthansa Could Be Forced To Fly 18,000 Empty Planes To Keep Slots

Great news for the distillate producers and pipeline delivery guys … not so much for the shut down fossil fuel crowd?

Common sense says there will be some sort of compromise … but of course common sense ain’t all that common these days?

I think there’s also lots of airports and a bunch of trade-offs

  1. I don’t think those spots have the same value as they did pre-Covid.
  2. Is preferred-option and next-option significantly different?
  3. Alliances. Goggle tells me Lufthansa is part of Star Alliance. Usually there are some airport benefits tied to alliances
