FMC buys pheromone company

FMC is acquiring Biophera, a Danish company with technology to make pheromones by a fermentation process.

Pheromones are natural materials secreted by insects to attract mates. Pheromones in traps attract the insects. Or sprayed in areas interrupt the breeding process to reduce insect population.

Pheromones have been costly to produce by traditional chemical synthesis. Fermentation technology could make them inexpensive and abundant.

FMC has been a minor player in ag chemicals for years. They acquired part of Dupont’s ag business to allow Dupont’s merger with Dow. That makes FMC a significant player.

The acquisition implies commitment to growth.
