Gazprom Russia make the move

Gazprom is beginning to cut supplies to Russia.

Reading on this board about the south cutting off cotton to England and France at the beginning of the Civil War is instructive.

Russia is removing its means of financing the war with Ukraine. This is welcome news.

Jeff this will shorten the war more than anything else. Other than Putin’s execution day.

He’s trying to cripple the countries that are trying to cripple it. Economic war can work both ways. But who crumbles first?

Angela must be glad she’s not in control of Germany any longer.

It should be noted that early WWI was fought as an economic blockade. The superior British Navy did not, at first, attack the German Navy. Rather they blockaded Germany to try and starve it. How did that work out? Germany then started doing the same thing, blockading England. Did it alleviate the need for actual, real war?

I’m beginning to think the economic sanctions against Russia were a mistake. Not that actual, real war was going to be any better, especially given the nuclear possibility. All available options, simply put, seem bad.

War is a bad option, always, but if you are the victim you have no choice but to fight.

Concentrating on the current cash flow of the economic sanctions is a mistake. While WWI was the first industrial age mechanized war, this is a technology age intelligence war. Russia is using up its arsenal which cannot be replaced without Western technology. The longer range, precision artillery delivered to Ukraine is already reversing Russia’s gains. Russia’s hold on Sevastopol in Crimea has weakened, they moved their ships out of Sevastopol, out of range of Ukraine’s newly acquired artillery which has been blowing up ammunition depots and military HQs in Russia occupied Ukraine weakening their capacity to wage war. The sanctions are doing their job.

This might be an economics board but war is about survival.

Interesting that Gazprom will not send gas to EU. Will pro-Putin Belarus still get gas? Will Kalingrad still get gas? Will pro-Putin Hungary still get gas? Will Turkey still get Russian gas?

Turkey has long term take-or-pay agreements for natural gas arriving in Turkey via pipeline from Russia, Iran, and Azerbaijan. In 2020, Russia had a 33.59% share in natural gas imports, Iran had 11.06%, and Azerbaijan had 24% with the remaining natural gas coming came from LNG imports.
