This era was during the time shortly after Yalow received the Nobel Prize for the development of radio immunoassay (working with endocrinologist Solomon Berson, who’d died before being nominated) and its use originally in detecting insulin. The lab was named and a fellowship established in his honour. Their story of early collaboration is pretty interesting, BTW. Of interest too, though, they chose not to patent their discovery…which, like Eng’s, had been fully funded by federal dollars.
