I have been in a discussion in another forum about pricing of models with various powertrains. I took a look at the models on offer now, in the EU, that were built on the new STLA Medium platform, vs other models.
The Opel Grandland EV starts at 46,750 Euros, with the hybrid version starting at 36,400. In France, the Peugeot 3008 hybrid starts at 35,100, the EV at 39,990, but has a footnote: includes 1,000 bonus for trading in a Pug, and a 4,000 bonus from the French government, which leaves us knocking on 45,000 Euros. Neither the Opel nor the Peugeot is available with an ICE powertrain.
The Jeep Compass, on the old Fiat platform, is only available as a hybrid for 38,900 Euros in France.
In the UK, the VW Tiguan is available with a gas engine for 35,920 GBP, or hybrid for 42,525 GBP. Those prices work out to 43,107 to 51,034 Euros.
Meanwhile, in Brazil, a gas engine S trim Compass starts at 241990 Reals, vs an S trim hybrid Compass at 347,300 Reals. 39,323 to 56,436 Euros.
In a different size class, but, in the US, a Jeep Grand Cherokee gas engine, starts at $36,495, while the hybrid starts at $60,490.
The observation is that, in the UK, stepping from ICE to hybrid increases price by about 8,000. Shifting from hybrid to EV adds about 10,000. But in Brazil, shifting from ICE to hybrid costs 17,000. In the US, shifting from ICE to hybrid costs an eye-watering $24,000. The EV Wagoneer S costs $10,000 more than the hybrid Grand Cherokee.
Why would there be such a difference in cost EU and UK, vs Brazil and US, in going from ICE, to hybrid, to EV?
