How heavily do the EU states, and UK, incentivize hybrids and EVs?

I have been in a discussion in another forum about pricing of models with various powertrains. I took a look at the models on offer now, in the EU, that were built on the new STLA Medium platform, vs other models.

The Opel Grandland EV starts at 46,750 Euros, with the hybrid version starting at 36,400. In France, the Peugeot 3008 hybrid starts at 35,100, the EV at 39,990, but has a footnote: includes 1,000 bonus for trading in a Pug, and a 4,000 bonus from the French government, which leaves us knocking on 45,000 Euros. Neither the Opel nor the Peugeot is available with an ICE powertrain.

The Jeep Compass, on the old Fiat platform, is only available as a hybrid for 38,900 Euros in France.

In the UK, the VW Tiguan is available with a gas engine for 35,920 GBP, or hybrid for 42,525 GBP. Those prices work out to 43,107 to 51,034 Euros.

Meanwhile, in Brazil, a gas engine S trim Compass starts at 241990 Reals, vs an S trim hybrid Compass at 347,300 Reals. 39,323 to 56,436 Euros.

In a different size class, but, in the US, a Jeep Grand Cherokee gas engine, starts at $36,495, while the hybrid starts at $60,490.

The observation is that, in the UK, stepping from ICE to hybrid increases price by about 8,000. Shifting from hybrid to EV adds about 10,000. But in Brazil, shifting from ICE to hybrid costs 17,000. In the US, shifting from ICE to hybrid costs an eye-watering $24,000. The EV Wagoneer S costs $10,000 more than the hybrid Grand Cherokee.

Why would there be such a difference in cost EU and UK, vs Brazil and US, in going from ICE, to hybrid, to EV?

There’s a big difference between “mild hybrid” and “plug-in hybrid”.

For example, the Toyota RAV4 “mild hybrid” has a 1.6 kwh battery, the plug-in RAV4 PRIME has an 18.1 kwh battery – more than 10 times it’s size.

Good thought. Let’s see what I find on the web sites.

Brazil Compass plug in hybrid, 30km battery range. 56,436 Euros.

UK Compass hybrid 33,900 GBP, no battery range listed. 40,558 Euro

UK Compass plug-in hybrid 40,655 GBP. 34 miles on battery. 48,640

Pug 3008 hybrid 35,035 GBP 41,916 Euro

Pug 3008 plug in hybrid 40,750 GBP 48,753

Pug 3008 EV 45,950 GBP 54,975 Euro

Vauxhall hybrid Grandland 34,700 GBP 41,515 Euro

Vauxhall EV Grandland 40,995 GBP 49,046 Euro

What is the difference between the EV Grandland and 3008?

Grandland: 325 mi range. 73KWH.

3008: 326 mi range. 73KWH (makes sense as the Grandland and 3008 are on the same platform.)

The Brazilian plug in Compass still costs a lot more than the UK plug in Compass, even though the UK Compass would appear to have a larger battery, as it has more range on battery. The Brazilian gas Compass costs about the same as a gas Compass in the US.

And the EV Grandland looks like a much better deal than the 3008.

Assembly lines and the time lines. The cost of factoring in the assembly lines is in the first few years. The US particularly GM makes its biggest move next year. GM’s system will bring down their EV pricing while being highly profitable. Tesla might lose market share by the end of the year.

Because EVs have fewer parts there are going to be fewer bugs to work out.

That was not true at Ford with their pickup truck but overall it will be true for GM because it is several models on top of the drivetrain. Fix one thing it is done across a few models.
