Illinois healthcare costs

A couple of years ago Illinois passed a law to use state funds to expand Medicaid for seniors. The expected cost was some $50 million/year.

Since then the program has been expanded and now covers down to age 42. The costs have exploded to over $400 million so far this year.

And for the next budget year starting in a couple of months…

Ouch! So there is now an enrollment freeze and co-pays have been introduced.

The stats keep reminding us universal health insurance–at least at the basic level is something we should have. But also better cost controls on medical treatments. I just reviewed a book over on New Paradigm Investing that said essentially that (in strong language).
