Looks like they are giving the land back because of a broken Treaty. You better check and see if you are sitting on Treaty land. Oh but they didn’t give him back his land and they still get to keep it as a park. Go Figure.

There was a story last week on a large trove of real estate deeds that were uncovered in South Carolina showing that the “40 acres and a mule” land program for former slaves often had the parcels stolen from the slaves with local Gov’t help.
The heirs of these unlawfully siezed lands need the property returned, just like we’re going after the stolen paintings of Holocaust victims in Europe.

Right and all the Indians who had their lands stolen from them need to get it back also. So that is all of the East and West coast states just like the Holocaust victims.

There was legislation passed in the 1800’s (Nonintercourse Act) to prevent Whites from stealing Indian land. These laws said that you could only transfer the title of land between an Indian and a White with an Act of Congress. So when they do the title search on a piece of land, and there is Indian ownership after 1834 and no Act of Congress permitting the transfer, the title to the land is not clear.
The now very wealthy Mashantucket Pequot Tribe of Connecticut snatched back 800 acres of land from White thieves and built a very profitable casino.
Of course, it’s going to be slow going to address all the claims.
There was a different Connecticut India Tribe that wanted to build a casino in Bridgeport, closer to the New York City market. This frustrated the plans of a well known New York real estate magnate currently prominent in the news. A televised public hearing on the project provided a memorable quote from said magnate.
“These guys don’t look like Indians to me, and they don’t look like Indians to other Indians.”

Berkshire Hathaway’s BNSF just got smacked with a $400 million judgement for trespassing on Swinomish tribal land. I bet they don’t do that again.

The Indians are so wealthy in Connecticut now that they set up a Tribal Court and hired a retired Federal Judge to run it according to Indian Law.

Not like the Pequot’s operation in Connecticut. They make more money than any single Las Vegas casino, largely due to the proximity to the large East Coast market and lack of competition.
A second Tribe, the “Last of the Mohegens” has an almost equally large operation about 10 miles away. I think their tribal land was somehow taken by the Boy Scouts. {{ LOL }}
