iPad Pro stand-by time?

My 11” M2 iPad Pro only lasts about 10 days from a 100% battery to 0%. This is with nothing running, the display off, and wi-fi disabled. Is this normal? Seems way too short.

First see what it says about the battery. On the old iPad I just checked, Settings / Battery shows me battery usage by app. Similar but more detailed on my iPhone 14, where there is also Settings / Battery / Battery Health and Charging shows that maximum capacity is 80% of when it was new.

I suspect are making the assumption that if you close the iPad lid and turn WiFi off ther will be no battery drain. There are lots of things that go on. Run the same test only turn it off. Settings; General; and at the bottom is Shut Down.

Yes, I realize that. Unless the iPad is off entirely, the OS is still running. But with no WiFi or any other user apps running, everything should be a quiescent as it can be.

No.

The system eats power keeping things ready to power up the screen, it continues to check for switch change - like the WiFi. You did not mention Blue Tooth if leave that on you are constantly looking for other Blue Tooth devices and broadcasting a signal.

Just turn it off if you want to conserve power. Apple ships these things turned off and they last months.

It might be quiet, but there are power drains and I forgot to include perhaps the largest. RAM. It take power to store the OS, icon images, etc. Those items are not read from Storage every time they appear - they come from RAM.

Good point. But that also means waiting much longer while it starts up before you can use it. I’ll see if turning off Bluetooth makes it last any longer. I also put it in Airplane mode, and low power mode.

Aside: I’m not sure how to even turn it off! When I press and hold the power button (which USED to give me a power off option), the border of the display window glows, which is probably some Siry/AI thing. I’m sure there’s a setting to turn that off, and also to power off without doing that…ok, there’s a power off option in Settings / General. Is there still a physical way to power down?

Turning iPad Pro Off (Models without Home Button)

  • Method 1: Buttons: Press and hold the top button and either volume button at the same time. When “slide to power off” appears, swipe it to the right.

  • Method 2: Settings: Go to Settings > General, scroll down to the bottom, and tap Shut Down.

  • Method 3: Siri: Ask Siri to “turn off my iPad”.

Yes, thanks, that works, which is the same method as for the iPhone. As for using Siri, I have Siri disabled, along with Apple Intelligence Beta. Hopefully that will also prolong the stand-by time.

Just an update: after 21 days of my iPad Pro being put in as deep a “stand by” mode as I could, while not powering it off, it still has 40% battery capacity left. Pretty good! ( And no, I don’t use my iPad much at all any more! )

But as someone about mentioned, I’d undoubtedly get even more stand-by time by powering the iPad off entirely.
