The owner of the Mets at the time also invested with Bernie Madoff. So not exactly the sharpest tool in the shed. They were basically believing Madoff’s unearthly returns would more than offset the contract.

Not a bad deal for Mr. Bonilla. But pales in comparison to the deal that the former Carolina Cougar’s owners made with the NBA (when the ABA folded and was consumed by the NBA.)
