Paywalled, but I’m surprised he was only 82, now. I would have expected him to be older, a cranky old phart pining for the 1920s, when a pointy white hat was seen as a badge of honor, in some circles.

Kevin Phillips was only 28 when he published his ideas on the 'Southern Strategy in the 1969 book “The Emerging Republican Majority"

Kevin Phillips’ book from 2006 entitled American Theocracy provided significant insight into three of America’s biggest problems,
and how all three are interrelated. I reviewed it back in February of 2008, before the collapse that took place in September triggered by many of the forces he described.

Barry Goldwater was far left, compared to the “thought leaders” now. Barry warned about the increasing influence of religious extremists, “political preachers” he called them, and he (Air Force Reserve Brigadier General) supported gays in the military (they are as much citizens as anyone else, so have the same stake in the security of the country).
Can’t have clear, logic based, thinking like that anymore.
