Interesting and quite detailed study by The Bank of America on living paycheck to paycheck:
Except there is the problem with (and, admittedly difficulty in gaining true knowledge of) what are “necessary” expenses. Necessary is what the poll taker says it is and may not actually be necessary in order not to live paycheck to paycheck. Is such an expense having Max or HBO or even any streaming service? Is such an expense being able to eat out at a restaurant several times a week? Is such an expense having the latest iPhone or Android? A car that is less than three years old? Etc.
It would helpful to have knowledge of how people understand the term in these cases, as well as among other such examples.

In America, a “necessary expense” is whatever is required to keep up with the neighbors next door.

My next door neighbor has a still and a marijuana garden, I need to start getting going.
Here’s a story from this morning about one of my neighbors that I will not be trying to keeping up with.
The ______ County Sheriff’s Office and multiple emergency agencies responded Thursday evening to a report of a gunman who reportedly fired at least one shot in the presence of responding officers in the 1900 block of ________ Road.
A law enforcement source said that after several hours, a suspect was taken into custody and no one was injured. No details were immediately available from the ______ County Sheriff’s department Friday morning.
Emergency responders from ______ County and other responding agencies were on the scene for several hours Thursday after receiving 911 calls about a person at the location with apparent mental health issues. [a neighboring] County responded with a SWAT team that provided mutual aid.
A lot of mental health therapy in this country is delivered by the police with a firearm.
