Japan and the Pacific Northwest of USA are both “alarm-ing” locations due to giant dangerous faults, big potentially explosive volcanos and Oceans of water near shallow shores. I find the different approaches they take to these issues to be culturally profoundly illuminating and interesting. The Japanese approach to keeping inhabitants of Tokyo safe is mind-blowing, and the USAian approach is also — but in the opposite way.
I am posting for two reasons: this circumstance shows how radically different are crux underpinnings of our economies and cultures, but also the Japanes approach makes this old systems/structural/complexity Engineer lose his mind.
