This is a problem that’s been brewing for well over 20 years now. The revitalized anti vaxx community built momentum in the years following the publication of Andrew Wakefield’s case report study in the late 1990s, purporting to show a link between the MMR vaccine and autism. Took off sufficiently to withstand the retraction of that paper and his loss of his medical license for fraud. Been building like compound interest since and the numbers of unvaccinated individuals is high enough for a big resurgence.
This isn’t restricted to the US…or the MMR vaccine (polio is another)…or humans, come to that. Pet owners are avoiding many vaccines for their companion animals…including rabies.

Well, a good many of the anti vaxx /anti science in general crowd…and those who’re influenced/bamboozled by them … oftentimes aren’t what you’d call technically “uneducated”. Quite the reverse in many cases. Even a background in the biomedical sciences isn’t always a guarantee that you’re going to get a rational opinion on topics where some sort of “controversy” can be conjured up … look at the random YouTube videos that get posted on this board after a brief opinion search via Google AI overview.
