Meta Pulls the Pin on the Metaverse

No real comment except the term “metaverse” came from Neal Stephenson’s 1992 cyberpunk classic novel “Snow Crash.” The metaverse as described in the book was pretty dystopian. It is a commercial wasteland where every pixel is monetized by the owner, Global Multimedia Protocol Group. The metaverse pay to play. Addicts (called gargoyles) pay for their habit by using wearable tech to collect data in the real world where it is uploaded and monetized.

A lot of parallels to what actually happened.

Neal Stephenson’s novels, although 30 years old, are still well worth reading just as speculations on the future, and are also wonderfully crazy fun.

I wonder when the company will change it’s name to recognize Zuck’s new passions. Bootlicker…has a nice ring to it!
