Microreactors for military bases

Exactly. And that is why the US nuclear industry has been dead in the water for decades There was never a standardized agreed upon design so the per units costs were and are far too expensive to be practical.

I’m simply suggesting that we avoid the exact same mistakes that were made the first time around. Heavy lift, I realize.

That’s the hope, but it is far, far too expensive to build bespoke nuclear plants at each site. Again, we already tried that approach in the US and the results are wildly unaffordable.

The US utilities did not want to have standard nuclear power plants. The wanted to have their own bells and whistles added. The only way to get standard plants is to follow the French model in the 1970-1990 where the government was in charge of the standard design which was the Westinghouse reactors. When I was working at Westinghouse we had French engineers work with us so that they could learn how to design the Westinghouse reactors.

However in the US having a standard design would mean design for the worst earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes, and floods. That makes the standard design too expensive. For example, West Coast magnitude earthquakes do not happen in Eastern US and Florida hurricanes do not happen is the Midwest or West Coast.
