Even the richest Americans face shorter lifespans than their European counterparts, study finds
{{ The researchers also highlighted a “survivor effect” in the U.S., where poorer individuals with worse health outcomes were more likely to die earlier, leaving behind a population that is healthier and wealthier as age groups progress. This creates the illusion that wealth inequality decreases over time, when in reality it’s partly due to the early deaths of the poorest Americans. }}
Sounds like the American Enterprise Institute study from yesterday that said that the upper middle-class was growing – sure, if you’re engineering a quicker death for poorer people.
I agree it depends on your eating habits. For most people, this means avoiding saturated fat in the larger part. Avoiding excess calories and avoiding things that are sweet.
Make it a priority to avoid excess calories with some degree of consistency …..total avoidance of saturated fat or all things sweet isn’t quite so necessary.
Then add meaningful exercise (the better to avoid/mitigate insulin resistance.and the Ugly Sisters of elevated glucose levels and hyper insulinemia……and the damage caused during pre/early diabetes….caused by not following that dietary restraint )
Then address sleep quality….
Then stress management…..
Start it all while you’re young
Choosing the right parents isn’t an option after the fact, but it makes a big difference to how well an individual who didn’t begin the above strategies early enough will be able to reverse the consequences without pharmacologic interventions.
Depends. I have been blessed with the parents, but we have strokes in our upper 80s in my family. If I want to be stroke-free, less saturated fat is a big deal. Plaque is caused by saturated fat raising the LDL in many cases.
Has anyone mentioned fiber in this thread? Overall It seems like many aren’t eating enough fiber.
Am I? Well good reason to eat allot of veggies. I also stick a tsp+ of psyllium husks in anything I can and also throw 2 gummies(gotta chew) of soluble fiber in any handful of supplements that I take. I really should keep track of this better.
Would be more meaningful if they broke things down by race/ethnicity. They treat the USA as if it homogeneous, which it is not. Is there a difference between USAsians of Eastern European decent vs current Eastern Europeans? etc, etc., etc.
Read a study about 5 years ago that compared 1st generation USAsians with country of origin and 1st generation was better off.
Great idea! We know that black people in New York live a lot longer than black people in Mississippi. It would be interesting to find out if there is any “ethnic activity” that accounts for that.
Also found this. According to new research, Black people live longer in areas with more Black primary care doctors.
Maybe I’d still have my leg if I had a black doctor?
