Potential Cigna buyout of Humana is a ‘when,’ not an ‘if,’ analyst says

Shares of Humana Inc. rallied Monday, and Mizuho analyst Ann Hynes said she believes a buyout by Cigna Group is likely — it’s just a matter of timing.

Hynes’ comment was in response to a Bloomberg report out late Friday that the companies had resumed merger talks after reports the companies ended talks late last year due to disagreements about price.

WSJ had article yesterday pointing out that higher medical costs as for Medicare follow from deferred treatments (like knee replacement) during Covid. Patients are catching up. Working off pent up demand.

Higher costs are stressing health insurance providers. That and end of donut hole and $2k per year cap give insurance companies reason to raise prices/co-pays etc and sometimes drop hospitals etc from network.
