If we’re going to be shipping more LNG to Europe we could use more nat gas in the US.

Manchin Pushes Defense Production Act for Natural Gas Pipeline

Senate Energy Chairman Joe Manchin called on the Biden administration to use the Defense Production Act if necessary to rush completion of a stalled pipeline through his state to help Europe replace Russian natural gas supplies.

Manchin said the 303-mile Mountain Valley Pipeline, which crosses his home state of West Virginia into Virginia, could transport two billion cubic feet a day and be up and running in four to six months.

I must confess, I’m always impressed with the optimism(?) American businesses display.

From the link: **"The pipeline is more than 90% complete but has been challenged by environmentalists, and a federal court in January rejected its permit to cross a national forest.**

Who builds 90% of a pipeline not knowing if they will be able to finish the darn thing?

Of course there really should be a cut off point for people to show up and start complaining about a project that has already sunk hundreds of $millions in costs but clearly that wouldn’t be any fun either?

Anymouse \<thinks we should stop building the Gordy Howe bridge with a 20 meter gap in the middle?\>

The environmental policies of WV is exactly why we did not buy there, specifically regarding fracking. With a minimum of Googling, you will find many issues with their enforcement of the “regulations” protecting the water supply. We were looking for a riverfront property.

IMO Manchin is not concerned with anything other than pumping up profits for their frackers. But hey, as they say, “Don’t let a crisis go to waste.”

On the other hand, if one is not _ipso facto_ opposed to fracking, then Manchin is using for a good economic solution to energy needs and geopolitical pressures.

Study finds fracking chemicals didn’t pollute water
[https://www.cbsnews.com/news/study-finds-fracking-chemicals-…](https://www.cbsnews.com/news/study-finds-fracking-chemicals-didnt-pollute-water-ap/)
A landmark federal study on hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, shows no evidence that chemicals from the natural gas drilling process moved up to contaminate drinking water aquifers at a western Pennsylvania drilling site, the Department of Energy told The Associated Press. After a year of monitoring, the researchers found that the chemical-laced fluids used to free gas trapped deep below the surface stayed thousands of feet below the shallower areas that supply drinking water, geologist Richard Hammack said…

Drilling fluids tagged with unique markers were injected more than 8,000 feet below the surface, but were not detected in a monitoring zone 3,000 feet higher. That means the potentially dangerous substances stayed about a mile away from drinking water supplies.

This article also says that methane isn’t toxic but _“is explosive and deadly”_ !

The other issue in the first study posted, is that not all oil wells are 8,000 ft. deep. In Pennsylvania in particluar there are many shallow high pressure wells of less than a mile deep.

Where do you think the story of an oil gushers came from?

Methane has long been found in some drinking waters.
“A 2012 report from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) summarized dissolved methane results from 239 water wells throughout New York state and found detectable methane concentrations in 53% of the water wells prior to any drilling of unconventional gas wells.”

_The other issue in the first study posted, is that not all oil wells are 8,000 ft. deep._

This map indicates that in West Virginia the Marcellus Shale formation lies from 5,000 to 9,000 feet in depth.

The oil/gas rich parts are some 50-250 feet thick.

_The map for West Virginia…_

And the study was done in wells in Pennsylvania and New York.

The geography is no more similar the New Hampshire and Florida. NH has some radiation in its well water because of the underlying granite so Florida which is on limestone so also be concerned?

The underground geology can change within the space of a few hundred feet never mind over **hundreds of miles**.

There is fake science and there is REAL peer reviewed and approved Science.

For WV specifically there have been small back country roads absolutely destroyed by the large trucks required at the fracking sites, as well as chemicals simply dumped at some rural area not monitored. We searched the local news quite a bit before we finally bought elsewhere in 2012, with many local papers covering environmental and traffic problems with the drilling sites. Given how it was ignored and regulations unenforced by the state, we chose a different state. It’s no use looking for a property on a pristine river if you are concerned about it staying that way.

Manchin was Governor at the time. I was not impressed.

_chemicals simply dumped at some rural area not monitored._

Right. The worry is not so much that chemicals would migrate up from a mile below the surface, but rather how the drilling fluid is handled at the well head and the stuff that comes up out of the well … I have read some extremely disturbing news stories about companies spreading this toxic, radioactive fluid purposefully on dirt roads as “dust control”!!! Unbelievable but true.

President Joe Biden and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Friday pledged to ramp up liquefied natural gas shipments to Europe…but it wasn’t immediately clear where they would get the extra fuel supplies.

The United States will work with international partners to supply an additional 15 billion cubic meters of LNG to Europe this year, and Europe is also committing to receive 50 bcm of LNG from the United States.

FERC issues ‘historic’ overhaul of pipeline approvals
[www.eenews.net/articles/ferc-issues-historic-overhaul-of-pip…](http://www.eenews.net/articles/ferc-issues-historic-overhaul-of-pipeline-approvals/)
The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission issued sweeping new guidance yesterday for natural gas projects, including a first-ever climate change threshold, upending decades of precedent for how major energy infrastructure is approved. FERC updated a 23-year-old policy for assessing proposed natural gas pipelines, adding new considerations for landowners, environmental justice communities and other factors…But while environmental advocates and some Democratic lawmakers welcomed the decisions, natural gas groups and their allies said the changes could raise energy costs and make it harder to meet demand for gas.

Pipeline builders will reapply for federal permits

The group building the Mountain Valley Pipeline hopes the third time is the charm. Twice they’ve been granted federal permits to proceed with the $6 billion project, and twice those permits have been yanked.

Equitrans, the lead investor in the effort, announced last week they will reapply for permits from the U.S. Forest Service and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Earlier this year, the Fourth Circuit Court of appeals in Richmond revoked the permits both agencies granted for the pipeline in 2021. It was the second time the court had revoked previously-issued pipeline permits from those two agencies.

By reapplying for the federal permits, Equitrans is forgoing the option of appealing those two rulings to the U.S. Supreme Court. Under a best-case scenario, Equitrans tells shareholders they would restart construction next spring or summer and finish it before the end of 2023.

The Supreme Court on Thursday struck down orders from a lower court that blocked the construction of the Mountain Valley Pipeline, all but ensuring the contentious natural gas project can be built and start operating by the end of the year.
