New Server Side Public License for MongoDB

NEW YORK, Oct. 16, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) – Today MongoDB, Inc. (Nasdaq: MDB), the leading modern, general purpose database platform, issued a new software license, calledServer Side Public License (SSPL), for MongoDB Community Server. The license clearly and explicitly states the conditions of deploying MongoDB - or any other open source project licensed under the SSPL - as a service. All versions of MongoDB’s Community Server released after today, including patch fixes for prior versions, will be licensed under the SSPL.

Why would MongoDB do this? Well, apparently Mongo DB got fed up with cloud giants ripping off its database.

Fed up with cloud giants ripping off its database, MongoDB forks new open-source license

Paperwork demands code from internet goliaths

Analysis After Redis Labs relicensed the modules it developed to complement its open-source database, from AGPL to Apache v2.0 with a Commons Clause, the free-software community expressed dismay.

And, inevitably, some responded by forking the affected code.

Today, the maker of another open source database, MongoDB, plans to introduce a license of its own to deal with the issue cited by Redis: cloud service providers that sell hosted versions of open-source programs – such as Redis and MongoDB database servers – without offering anything in return.

What will happen to the old business model? Freebies to get clients to try out the limited version and if interested, pay the subscription for the premium ones. So, no longer freemium?
