Interesting idea, done in Europe for business travel on short hops.

Yes, and on those short hops, in the business section it looks just as cheap as it will here. But, there is enough demand that people will pay for it. I can’t wait until carry on size luggage goes the way of the dodo in the cabin unless the passenger pays for plus or upgrades.
Allegiant does this already with their a la carte system. In europe, on smaller planes, the crew check everything that is bigger than a backpack.

The carry-on luggage craze happened because of COVID. Everyone’s luggage kept getting lost.
Some folks are past that yet.
Carry on luggage…and lots of it…started long before that. Pretty much when airlines began charging for checked baggage, I’d say. I pay to check everything but a lightweight handbag…which I’d prefer to stow in the overhead compartment above my seat. I routinely have to shove it under the seat where I want to stretch my legs.

I’ve almost always carry-on because I don’t want to risk the airline losing my stuff. I also don’t like the hassle of baggage claim.
Funny story. This week I’m traveling to AL. I paid extra to check a bag because I had to bring all sorts of stuff with me to the project. I was planning on carring-on my clothes, meds, etc. At the bag check, they offered to check my second bag for free. I thought, “what the hell, as long as I need to go the baggage claim, I might as well check the second bag too!”
My connection was cancelled due to weather just as I was boarding the first flight. Bags got transferred to the rebooked connection the following morning. Stanky El D showed up late to work.

At least on international flights, one bag can be checked for free.
