On Victory Day without victory

On Victory Day without victory…

That’s a question Russian President Vladimir Putin will have to answer, at least implicitly, when his country marks one of its biggest and most bombastic patriotic holidays, Victory Day, on Monday

— a highly choreographed celebration of Moscow’s military might that awkwardly coincides this year with a smaller neighbor’s improbable defiance in the face of a withering 10-week assault.

But in these weeks of warfare, Putin’s once-vaunted military has failed to seize Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, or depose its government.

Russia has also suffered the ignominious sinking of a flagship missile cruiser and suffered military casualties likely exceeding those of the Soviets’ signature debacle in Afghanistan in the 1980s.

Monday’s holiday marks the 77th anniversary of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany, a day of deep emotional resonance for Russians who still recall a staggering death toll of 27 million compatriots in World War II.

Sounds like Russian colonels in Ukraine have the same lifespan of a 2nd Lieutenant in Vietnam. Another sign of inflation, Dave?

Nigel Gould Davies, former British ambassador to Belarus, said: ‘Russia has not won this war. It’s starting to lose it.’

He said that unless Russia has a major breakthrough, ‘the balance of advantages will shift steadily in favor of Ukraine, especially as Ukraine gets access to growing volumes of increasingly sophisticated Western military equipment.’

Well, American colonels didn’t have to get down in with the troops so the 2nd Lieutenants took it on the chin.

The Russian colonels seem to have to get down in the mud with the troops in order to get many (most?) of their orders obeyed.

And to shoot the deserters in the back, a job formerly done by the Kommissars.
