A through read will illuminate the reader to the knowledge that ground combat is MUCH more deadly than WW 2 or Korean wars.
The current state of the war.
First, sensors on the ground and air mean there is almost zero surprise. Both sides know everything about the enemy.
Second, we all know the Ukrainian use of drones has been effective in changing the battlefield. The number of armor pieces on the battlefield is 5 to 10% of what was originally on the battlefield in 2022.
Third, Russians have adopted Ukraine drone tactics for offense reducing the effectiveness of Ukraine drones.
Four, Ukraine lean hard on drone strategy especially as equipment & munition from the West has been reduced.
Five, both sides has poor trained infantry. Ukraine because they require on the front NOW. The Russians though no longer use mass attacks treat them as cannon fodder.
Six, both sides attack supply lines as munitions are needed to maintain defensive Ukraine lines. And Russians require munition to maintain momentum in the attack.
The main point of the article is:
As a senior Ukrainian UAV officer noted in an interview, ‘their task is easier than ours because they set out to kill while we must kill and save our people’.9 Still, Ukraine has been aided by the fact that the onus is on Russian forces to overcome the wall of drones, because it is Russia that is on the offensive. Fortunately for Ukraine, Russia has not remedied the decline in its force quality – despite having the resources to do so – and has therefore not taken advantage of the increasing brittleness of Ukraine’s defence. Some Ukrainian commanders recognised the need to reform recruitment, training and the employment of the wider orchestra of war, and are now working to see whether Ukraine can once again build an advantage across a wider range of military tools.
In summary, Russia has largely failed to develop a concept of combined arms manoeuvre to overcome the tactical problems it faces, despite having the resources to do so. Ukraine has struggled to marshal the resources needed to buy the time and space to experiment
