OT: Jonah and the whale

The man’s father can be heard telling him to stay calm, while trying to direct him back to his overturned boat post-spit-out. I’m not sure I’d have the same mental clarity after witnessing a miracle of biblical proportions.

I’d be thinking ‘stay calm are you kidding’? I’m getting out of here.

“Patooie!”

Look at it from the whale’s point of view.

Capturing a school of small fish in one gulp is a feeding strategy of humpback whales. They even team up to do this using a bubble net which they exhale from the blow hole on top of the head.

Imagine the humpback looking forward to a tasty meal of herring or sardines and instead grabbing a huge lump of – what the heck? Of course it would immediately spit it out. Blecch!

From the man’s point of view – OMG!

What “dad’s calm”? The camera was mounted on a tripod on his kayak. The BBC showed more of the video, when dad paddled over to pick up his son, who was clinging to the overturned kayak. It was obvious the dad was not holding the camera.

I was lucky enough to witness bubble net feeding by a humpback from about fifty feet away the last time we were in Alaska. It was truly amazing to witness.

Actually that happens with sharks, too, when they they bite into a swimmer’s leg.

Shark thinks, “Hey, that doesn’t taste like a seal.”, and spits it out.
