One example of her grace I saw: Somebody said that song ‘I Will Always Love You” is your song.”
She replied, “No, I may have written it, but Whitney Houston made it hers.”
That, even though her version had been #1 on the country charts years before, and the fact that it’s a deeply personal song, written to Porter Wagoner as she was leaving his television show which brought her to national fame.
Lots of stories about her philanthropy and good works, but this is how a giving person reacts.

She was a rare talent. She was among the best singers and songwriters. People adored her worldwide. I will miss her kindness to those around her. She put others first.

That’s her generosity of spirit. Whitney’s version was powerful and great, for sure. Dolly’s was sweet and beautiful, straight to the heart. Hard to say which was better for me, though.
Elvis was going to record it but his manager, Col. Tom Parker, demanded that the singer also get half of the publishing rights. Parton said no, thinking of her family and how their inheritance would be affected.
“I said, ‘I’m really sorry,’ and I cried all night. I mean, it was like the worst thing. You know, it’s like, ‘Oh, my God… Elvis Presley.’ And other people were saying, 'You’re nuts. It’s Elvis Presley. I mean, hell, I’d give him all of it,” Parton told CMT in July 2006. “I said, 'I can’t do that. Something in my heart says, ‘Don’t do that.’”
Still, Parton said she’s long wondered how Presley would have sounded on the song. She suspects he would’ve “killed it.”
“But anyway, so he didn’t,” she told the network. "Then when Whitney’s came out, I made enough money to buy Graceland."

Wow - I hadn’t known that Dolly bought Graceland! I thought the family or Presley Trust still owned it. Amazing, but good business for sure with the still very lucrative Elvis tourist industry.
