Risk of Tesla camera-only self-driving

The Apollo spacecraft used multiple, but different sensors for positional attributes.

Every commercial aircraft uses multiple sensors for a variety of things including airspeed and altitute.

Most heavy industrial automation uses multiple sensors for safety, detecting things like vibration, metal fatigue and stress

Nuclear plants must have redundant - but different sensors to monitor fluids, heat, and other characteristics as are important to the safe operation of the system.

Humanoid robots use tactile and range sensors to be able to grasp things and perform their tasks.

Fluid monitoring in large tanks is often done by redundant sensors measuring both pressure at the bottom as well as float distance at the top.

Patients on life support have a variety of sensors to monitor their condition, some of them work individually but others feed information back and forth to each other to insure that human systems are within expected parameters.

Data centers and energy infrastructure use multiple but different sensors to keep heat mitigation, electricity flows, and other elements of their respective processes within norms.

This is not a new concept. Redundant monitoring is as old as the (modern) mining profession, oil extraction and transport industry, and others. Heck, my home security system detects movement in the yard, but doesn’t trigger an alarm until it verifies that the incident is “human”; but will also trigger on the basis of a simple breach of a door or window.

So

  • Waymo’s AVs with sensor fusion running 4 million miles per week
  • with their published safety data and analyses on 10s of millions of miles showing much better than human safety and
  • their many articles with demos and videos
  • most other AV companies using multi-sensor

isn’t enough evidence?

People knowledgable on AVs and machine learning are going to count the above as good, obvious evidence.

Waymo blog:

Politely, I believe you have some misunderstanding of machine learning and sensor fusion.

Upthread, I directed you to specific articles and asked if you read them.

Never heard back.

Perhaps you are not open to evidence?
