Russian Immigrants Smuggled To Key West

This is a first. And this will be interesting as we see how these Russians and East Europeans are treated by Homeland Security. Were they Cubans, welcome to America as long as your wet foot hits American soil:

Alyson Crean, a spokeswoman for the Key West Police Department, said a boat chartered from Cuba docked at the south end of Duval Street, in the heart of the city’s tourist district, around 4 p.m. Sunday.

Crean said Key West police were called after about 15 of the migrants, whom she identified as being from Russia or other countries, walked into Southernmost Beach Cafe. Police alerted the Department of Homeland Security and its sub-agency, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, about the landfall.

During the Cold War, Russian defectors were immediately welcomed to the U.S. They risked their lives to come since the USSR considered them traitors. They often brought important skills and information with them.

A very enjoyable movie was based on this.

I think that a similar situation applies today. Accepting – even publicly inviting – Russian emigres would be a propaganda coup.
