Semi-OT: Sierra Club Struggles

The Sierra Club has been struggling for three years. The NYT reported on it earlier this month.

The Sierra Club Embraced Social Justice. Then It Tore Itself Apart.

The group has lost 60% of the four million members and supporters it counted in 2019. It has held three rounds of employee layoffs since 2022, trying to climb out of a $40 million projected budget deficit…

During Mr. Trump’s first term, when the Sierra Club was flush with donations, its leaders sought to expand far beyond environmentalism, embracing other progressive causes. Those included racial justice, labor rights, gay rights, immigrant rights and more. They stand by that shift today. By 2022, the club had exhausted its finances and splintered its coalition.

It drove away longtime volunteers who loved the club’s single-minded defense of the environment, by asking them to fully embrace its pivot to the left.

I don’t give to mega charities anymore. Local groups with more transparent oversight are where my money goes. Besides the relentless pestering for donations, I’d rather not fund bloated salaries.
