China began its most extensive coronavirus lockdown in two years Monday to conduct mass testing and control a growing outbreak in Shanghai as questions are raised about the economic toll of the nation’s “zero-COVID” strategy. Shanghai, China’s financial capital and largest city with 26 million people, had managed its smaller previous outbreaks with limited lockdowns of housing compounds and workplaces where the virus was spreading.

Panic-buying was reported on Sunday, with supermarket shelves cleared of food, beverages and household items. Additional barriers were being erected in neighborhoods Monday, with workers in hazmat suits staffing checkpoints.
While the Ukraine war has supplied significant misdirection of attention, the major current risk to the West is that COVID sweeps across China. The country has pretty successfully prevented COVID from breaching their boarders. The is little immunity of their population as the vaccines used in China have not tested to be as effective (as demonstrated in places like the Seychelles) as the mRNA ones used in the US and some other countries as well as much of the population remaining unvaccinated.
If China were to suffer a major shutdown/disruption country-wide, our current supply chain and inflation concerns would be a squall as compared to a thunderstorm.

The city is now reporting more than 20,000 positive tests daily. The temporary lockdown has become indefinite. Food is becoming a problem. They are opening a new 50,000 patient hospital.
