Sodium Batteries from Natron Energy

C&EN is reporting that privately held Natron Energy is building a sodium battery factory in North Carolina. Capacity 24 Gwh. Sodium is less costly than lithium and most suited to stationary storage as for utilities. Or they think as a solution to the intermittence problem of wind and solar. They cite low cost, long life cycle, and quick discharge as advantages.

They are apparently the largest in the US, but several plants may be on the way in China where they might be used for short range Evs.

Large scale manufacture remains to be demonstrated.

Their existing plant is in Holland, MI. North Carolina is an expansion.

Natron Energy has received significant public and private financing including a $19M SCALEUP grant from ARPA-E.

Their website lists a dozen investors including Chevron and United Airlines. https://natron.energy/company/investors
