We are thrilled to share that Governor Newsom has signed a final budget agreement that commits an additional $10 million in vital funding for geothermal exploratory wells, bringing total state support to $20 million. This commitment represents a significant milestone for California’s energy future and our local community in developing more access to reliable, renewable energy.
At Sonoma Clean Power, we know that to meet our climate goals and keep the lights on 24/7, we need reliable, renewable baseload energy. California has some of the best geology in the country for geothermal development, but the complexity of early-stage exploration has often been a barrier.
The success of the federally funded Utah FORGE initiative offers a proven model. Federal funding covered the initial research wells in southwestern Utah, and the resulting geologic data were made publicly available. That groundwork allowed private industry to develop on a larger scale, helping drive billions of dollars in investment and create hundreds of well-paying, highly skilled jobs in the region. With this new funding, California can apply a similar approach and position itself as a national leader in geothermal development.
That is why our Policy & Advocacy Team has been working tirelessly in Sacramento, championing state-supported research that reduces early-stage risk and helps promising geothermal projects move forward. This funding marks meaningful progress toward bringing that proven approach to California. Leveraging a cost sharing model, the private sector will match the state’s $20 million investment, for a total of $40 million in funding.
By investing in exploratory wells, California is clearing a path for next-generation geothermal energy to move forward right here at home through our GeoZone initiative. The investment can also strengthen our regional economy, support local jobs, and help ensure a stable grid that relies less on polluting natural gas.
