Spanish Island of Mallorca enforcing $1,000 entry fee to crack down on drunken Brits

{{ The Actual Costs

  • Daily Amount: Travelers must technically show access to roughly €113 to €118 per day, which converts to about £97 to £103.

  • Minimum Total: Even for a very short trip, authorities require a baseline total of roughly €972 to €1,065 per person.

  • Not Cash in Hand: You do not need to carry this exact amount in physical cash. You just need proof that you can access these funds.

This is more fallout from Brexit. Fee does not apply to visitors from EU countries.

Wonder if Temple Bar in Dublin should do this. But the Irish have the international drunks corralled there.

I would disagree. For years the island has been know as a place for young people to go to get drunk and create havoc. It’s a failed business model as AI points out:

While streets and beaches are packed, local businesses are struggling to stay in the green. A negotiated hospitality worker wage increase—set to rise cumulatively by up to 14% through 2027—has drastically increased labor costs. Combined with high inflation for electricity, food supply chains, and linen services, hotel and restaurant owners are finding it nearly impossible to maintain healthy profits without driving away customers.

They are going to try and reinvent themselves as an upmarket holiday island. So they should as it’s a beautiful island.

Edit

I once had a young man who worked for me who went on holiday to Mallorca with a few of his friends. When he got back he had jet lag despite there being no time difference. Turned out that he used to sleep in until late afternoon, hit the bars early in the evening and get to bed at 4.00am or 5.00am.
