Standing desks may hurt your health--large study

Movement is key

These findings suggest that simply swapping sitting for standing isn’t a perfect solution. Our bodies respond better to regular movement rather than static positions, whether that’s sitting or standing.

Incorporating short walks, stretching or light exercises throughout the day can interrupt long periods of inactivity and offer [significant health benefits]

I use a desk that can be raised or lowered. I stand about half the time. I definitely move around more when I have the desk in the standing position.

IOW nothing has changed. It’s what it’s always been. More intestinally produced science purported as knowledge science. Science settled. You can throw 10 glasses of water and 10,000 steps a day in that hole too.

And who among even the laziest of us does not do this? Except FDR and Chief Ironside who might have some limitations. Everybody does these things. Nobody doesn’t do them. You sit a while then you go to the can or get some coffee/check the mail, and of course everybody stretches.

Just a Click bait title.

Nobody working sits for 10 hours straight or stands for 10 hours straight without movement. We remodeled our office about 1 year ago so every desk now can be adjusted to be standing or sitting desk. There are people that still sit all day but nobody stands all day. The people that stand tend to do it on and off. I typically stand if in a meeting where I won’t multitask as I need to be actively engaged in the conversation. I’ll probably also stand for the hour or so after lunch. My average time in the offfice is about 10 hours and probably stand 2-3 avg and 4 hours max.

From what I observe, it is similar… standers are always alternating and have more movement, but not standing the entire day without movement.

That was poor.

There is no discussion in the article of varicose veins.

The standing desk convert is half the solution but that would take more study and a younger cohort.

“ Prolonged standing can cause blood to pool in the legs, leading to conditions such as varicose veins.”

Just a mention. That is not a discussion.

If you get all your medical information as mere mentions you will be in trouble one day.

I already pretty much mentioned I think the article is Clickbait BS. The article pretty much had no discussion of anything. But when you said there was “no discussion” did you actually read and know that it was mentioned? Or is that the reply after realising that it came up in the article?

Since everybody does these things, that includes both desk sitters and standers. To the extent that the two groups overlap the regular activities net out.

I read it and can not get that time back.
