Suddenly women are being offered dresses and corsets.
Bonnie Erbay’s PBS program this week features the womens sufferage monument to be built on the mall in Washington DC. Also a womens history museum in the Smithsonian.
Women are on the move!!
Fashion designers are always looking for novelty. Personally, I love some of the looks from the 1950s. But there’s a big difference between “special occasion” wear and everyday wear. The 1950s looks have some issues that will limit their uptake by the mass market today: they are much more expensive to produce than today’s clothes, they are less flexible and comfortable, and they don’t look good on the obese (about 40% of the population).
I always go with the philosophy that a woman should wear what looks best on her, regardless of fashion.
On the right figure, 1950’s styles are far more attractive than today’s styles. Here’s a photo of my parents taken in about 1951. My mother’s dress was a beautiful deep green velvet which is almost never seen today since it’s expensive and must be handled carefully during manufacture and cleaning.

Beautiful couple.
The article is offering a step backward for those who want it.
Fifties!? (berf) Give me men’s clothes from the 30s. I watch an ep of “All Creatures, Great And Small” or “Jeeves And Wooster”, and drool.
I love the jacket Clark Gable wore in “It Happened One Night”. You can’t see it well in this clip, but it has a lot of extra fabric in the back, so you can move your arm, without the sleeve pulling up to your elbow. I’ll take the fedora too!
