Income Statement

Revenue was up 125% YoY and an outstanding 64% sequentially. Their acquisition of RSP was a meaningful addition to their Revenue although they do not break it out, they did say that DDIC’s (Display Driver Integrated Chips) represented over 50% of mobile revenues. DDIC’s are what RSP produced. Cost of Revenue was up 172%, This should come down and we need to see it come down. Before the acquisition of RSP they had gross margins in the mid 40 percent. This quarter their gross margins were at 27%. Syna says these will come back to the mid 40’s and that is something I want to watch. Because for all of the Revenue they made not much actually dropped down to the bottom line. If you look at net income, Gaap earnings, they were up only 8% Yoy, but if you look at the Non-Gaap earnings they were up an outstanding 70%. This shows what could be coming together in the future quarters. After Rsp is fully integrated and they get costs down we should see meaningful Gaap growth.

Balance Sheet

This quarter their Cash was down 17% but they have paid off their contingency liabilities or they just didn’t have to pay any. Their debt was down to $7.5 million and this is a portion of long term debt. The decrease in cash was mostly due to the acquisition of RSP. Also the company used $91 million to repurchase approximately 3.5% of the total shares outstanding.

Cash Flow

Free Cash Flow was negative this quarter and was mostly due to the cost of buying RSP’s inventory. Inventory this quarter was up $139.4 million dollars. Taxes were also up $28.5 million YoY and $29.5 million QoQ.

Conclusion
The addition of RSP for Syna was definitely a plus. They supplied 50% of Revenue in mobile space and since the PC portion is declining, Syna knows that mobile is going to be their bread and butter. Revenue was up huge but the net income was up only 16%. But this doesn’t tell the true story. If you look at non-Gaap earnings you will see that they were up 70%. This can be telling on what is going to happen in the future. I think Syna will get their costs under control and we will see more money drop to the bottom line in Gaap earnings.

While I like this company I also realize you have to keep an eye on it. This company has been around for a long time and they have moved firmly into mobile and their growth in Revenue is impressive. But they are also spending a lot of money to keep ahead of the pack. I think they are the leader right now and they are moving into a lot of different companies. They have their products in Samsung, Xiaomi, HTC, Lenovo, LG, Huaweii, ZTE ,Gionee, Blackberry and also a small company called Apple.

They also are moving into displays for cars. If you have to touch a screen, control a display, or manage a computer device of any kind they want to be in it. They have a wide product line and they are aggressively staying in the lead. They have backlog of $245 million dollars entering the March quarter and they are guiding for revenue in the $450 million to $490 million, an increase of 120% to 140% Yoy.

Finally, when Synaptics acquired RSP this gave them the ability to be in Apple products. Since the acquisition, rumors have come out that Apple is shopping for another supplier for their display. This may or may not be true but my thoughts on this is, maybe Apple is spreading this rumor because they are trying to negotiate a better price with Syna. Another thought might be that Syna is not willing to drop their prices so Apple is trying to find someone else to squeeze. In either case this is something to watch although with Synaptics in so many devices, and with RSP now part of the company, The future growth should be impressive. Also I want to explain the P/E. The third quarter of 2014 the Gaap EPS was (1.12) due to the Validity acquisition. The next quarter we should see a big improvement on Gaap EPS when this in no longer calculated in EPS.
