Musk sees the risk of depending on supply chains that work well until they break. Supply chains are great while not tarnished by politics, local or international.

No rare earths in the motor. It uses an induction motor:

“The first AC commutator-free polyphase induction motors were independently invented by [Galileo Ferraris](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galileo_Ferraris "Galileo Ferraris") and [Nikola Tesla](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nikola_Tesla "Nikola Tesla"), a working motor model having been demonstrated by the former in 1885 and by the latter in 1887.”

Millions and millions are used in factories. Simple, cheap, reliable. Modern electronics needed for control, of course.

Front drive units in other Teslas are induction motors.
