The American Middle Class Crisis

No. Median income tells you what happened to the 93% of the population that failed to move up – and why they’re so angry.

That is a negative. Piston engined small planes and warbirds run on 100 low lead.

Steve

If you are retired you are on SS and Medicare.

Sure your words are true, sarcasm!!

You will be retired perhaps one day if you are not now. Same difference.

People say crap that does not mean you need to believe it.

Sure but they are overwhelmingly retirees on SS and Medicare complaining that working people are not working hard enough.

Put on your Wellingtons.

Hawkwin not so fast…in real dollars? Or your case is just wrong.

FAA recently approved fleet-wide use of unleaded fuel for General Aviation.

And the transition is a few years out. The article from two years ago declaring leaded gas gone was wrong.

Steve

Not retired and SS will mean little to me when I do. Instead of the incessant whining about why the govt doesn’t do more, you could get out there and do it for yourself. Hungry dogs run faster.

Then tax the rich into poverty. We need their creativity.

I do a heck of a lot for myself.

This is not whining. The mischaracterization is unwanted and false.

My problem with supply side econ is the lying and corruption. My bigger problem with supply side econ is we drove a heck of a lot of our means of production out of the country.

We are left with $32 tr in debt because of complete mismanagement based on supply side econ. Instead of an honest appraisal we get blame the poor.

Just an aside for the astute readers…

The man or woman with the guiltiest conscience can say things that are actually the opposite of their real lives off line.

Someone without a job on food stamps can reinvent themselves here as the biggest capitalist of all time. We do not know each other that well unless we have calmly and respectfully discussed things. Guilty consciences do not rationally talk things over.

LOL, adults.

One would think that quite clear when it states “adults” right in the subtitle.

Sheesh Hawkwin,

I do not want to come off as snarky…or snide or witty…no risk of that. LOL

“Adults” misses the mark. You are laughing but I have to ask…do you know what “real” means in econ? It means after inflation. It does not mean play money from Monopoly.

After inflation do your numbers stand up? Or has the bottom 80% fallen backwards as we have heard in real dollars after inflation…the clearer but redundant way of saying it.

I honestly don’t know why I waste my time responding. I had you on ignore for the longest time because I found your responses nonsensical the majority of the time. This response is no different.

You clearly did not read anything at the link. So here:

In this analysis, “middle-income” adults in 2021 are those with an annual household income that was two-thirds to double the national median income in 2020, after incomes have been adjusted for household size, or about $52,000 to $156,000 annually in 2020 dollars for a household of three. “Lower-income” adults have household incomes less than $52,000 and “upper-income” adults have household incomes greater than $156,000.

The income it takes to be middle income varies by household size, with smaller households requiring less to support the same lifestyle as larger households. The boundaries of the income tiers also vary across years with changes in the national median income. Read the methodology for more details.

The terms “middle income” and “middle class” are used interchangeably in this analysis for the sake of exposition. But being middle class can refer to more than just income, be it the level of education, the type of profession, economic security, home ownership, or one’s social and political values. Class also could simply be a matter of self-identification.

If there are more people moving into the upper class than moving into the lower class, then the impact of inflation is irrelevant. In other words, all values are adjusted for inflation every year, yet still more people moved up and out of the middle class than moved down and out of it.

Median family income in the early 1980s was just $20,000. The poverty threshold was below $10,000 for a family of four. Don’t ya think Pew just might have accounted for that change over the years?

If you are more comfortable not responding by all means be comfortable.

I wanted to see if you understood the topic. Your cut and paste jobs are a second rate job.

Workers make up the bottom 80% even with some management titles on the lower levels.

The purchasing power has not budged since 1970.

Your ideas on econ have limited merit.

The interesting thing is you agree with me and do not know how to research the topic.

Completely wrong. His “Democratic Socialist” label may play in Vermont, but it’s a killer in the rest of the country. I prefer politicians who have a chance of getting things done.

But I see you’re not opposed to socializing things you like: roads, police, fire, Army, Navy, Air Force, bridges, education, federal waterways, national parks, the FBI, prisons, Congress, the Mint, the Courts, and so on.

I’m not sure if you support other things which are held, regulated, or monitored collectively, things like Social Security, Medicare, the Fed, Library of Congress, Center for Disease Control, GSA, FDIC, and regulatory bodies like OSHA, EPA, and so on.

I’d be surprised if you support Medicaid, welfare, or SNAP, and similar, or subsidies to get growing industries to critical mass, say like funding the internet or subsidizing solar panels or EVs.

Well, I support all of them. But within limits, which, frankly, I think our government is doing reasonably well. I could pick out areas where it’s not, but I don’t expect perfection; I’ve never seen it - except for Kate Beckinsale - but that’s a different thing.

Bernie is often right, but no, I don’t support him because he’s painted himself into a terrible box which guarantees him a place of honor in the pantheon of “can’t get elected to the Presidency” candidates.

These are all typical straw man and absolutist arguments by the progressive as a way to claim the moral high ground. Always well meaning, the progressive is deaf and dumb to the failures of those policies never reflecting but solely focused on intent and that they are well meaning. Most importantly, never willing to give of their own assets but happy to volunteer their fellow citizen’s earnings.

It’s not inconsistent to support public funding of safety net programs, appropriate regulations and still want a society that functions largely based on free and private markets, which has elevated more people out of poverty than any other form in history. We have a moral obligation to take care of those that can’t compete but with a combination of both private charity and public programs. We also need to understand that people want more than just food and shelter, they want purpose.

But you are correct, I don’t in large part support the use of public dollars to fund private growing industries. Time and again, the funds are poorly allocated by politicians and with strings that have nothing to do with the public good. Look at EV credit, is it given across the board? Nope, it’s weighted based on whether the business uses unionized labor. We fund professional stadiums with public dollars when school buildings are in shambles.

Bernie Sanders is an ideological fool that touted Cuba in 1970’s as an example of what could be the utopia of socialism. He doesn’t even have a basic understanding of Equality vs. Equity. His only contribution is bringing back the fashion of homemade mittens and blathering on about the minimum wage.

We’ve been indulging people for 30 years in a discussion about rights and privileges. It’s time to grow up, recognize our obligation to prioritize those that need the most help and show some fiscal restraint for future generations, and start talking about our obligations and responsibilities.

PS. Kate is pretty hot but how these are the topics that surface on a website dedicated to building personal wealth through investing is a mystery.
