The new brain drain

In the 1960’s there was something called ‘the brain drain’ where talented skilled people left the UK, often for the USA. We are now in the middle of a new brain drain where qualified youngish people are leaving the UK in ever increasing numbers, now going Eastwards towards the Pacific area. I’m trying to see what the cost is to the UK of this movement, if there is one. While there is much in the press about this there is little in the way of figures to back up the various claims.

If anyone can point me to any figures about this then I would be very grateful. It doesn’t need to be about the UK, I just need something to get me started on something I’m doing.

You may also assume the same brain drain has started in the U.S. Cut to federal research grants cause universities and research institutes to cut back. Fewer graduate school positions. Less hiring. Plus difficulty getting visas and immigration raids.

This uncertainty causes talent to choose other careers or go elsewhere when they can. The consequences are expected to compound and may cost us technology leadership in selected fields for decades. Just as Sputnik launched many careers in science this is the reverse.

A major blunder w serious consequences.
